A woodland path along a mossy stone wall in autumn

A hiking weekend with friends

Two days of walking in the valley, then a long table together: around the barbecue on the terrace in spring, by the fire in autumn.

The plan

Saturday: the Cascatelles

The Cascatelles loop starts in Hastière: about 11.5 km, nearly 4 hours and 180 m of climbing. It follows the Meuse, passes the Waulsort weir, then climbs along a stream with several small waterfalls. Waymarking: yellow rectangle.

Picnic at the picnic and barbecue spot by the water. Late in the afternoon, a round at Brasserie les Étoiles or Le Rio in Waulsort.

Back at the bungalow, the muddy boots stay by the door. In spring, the barbecue goes on and dinner is served on the terrace, still warm from the sun. In autumn, the open fire draws everyone in to put the world to rights until late.

Sunday: rocks and views

Morning coffee, maps spread out, then take your pick: the trails of Furfooz nature reserve above the Lesse, or the Freÿr rocks facing the Meuse. The keenest can drive on to Nismes for walks in the Viroin valley.
